Ocean Signal rescueME Personal Locator Beacon

The smaller the personal lifesaver beacon, the more likely you are to wear it. Ocean Signal’s rescueME PLB is compact, waterproof, and mounts on your lifejacket.

The likelihood of a sailor carrying a personal locator beacon is directly proportionate to the unit’s size: The more convenient it is to carry and use, the more likely you are to wear it. With that fact in mind, Ocean Signal has introduced the rescueME PLB, a compact device with a battery that lasts for seven years, an integrated GPS with 66-channel capability (for extremely rapid signal acquisition), and one-hand operation. Even after the unit’s 24-hour satellite-transmit time expires, the rescueME will continue to assist rescuers thanks to a homing beacon and strobe light. The rescueMe is waterproof but doesn’t float; though it comes with a detachable floating lanyard, it’s really meant to be attached to a PFD with the rubber mounting strap that’s included. At press time, the rescueME was yet to be certified and priced for U.S. markets, but that, according to the manufacturer, should happen very soon. We mention it now because of its compact size—it will definitely be worth the wait.

The U.S. Coast Guard is asking all boat owners and operators to help reduce fatalities, injuries, property damage, and associated healthcare costs related to recreational boating accidents by taking personal responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their passengers. Essential steps include: wearing a life jacket at all times and requiring passengers to do the same; never boating under the influence (BUI); successfully completing a boating safety course; and getting a Vessel Safety Check (VSC) annually from local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, United States Power Squadrons(r), or your state boating agency’s Vessel Examiners. The U.S. Coast Guard reminds all boaters to “Boat Responsibly!” For more tips on boating safety, visit www.uscgboating.org.
